What is RD?

A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a savings product where you invest a fixed amount every month for a predetermined period. Unlike FDs which need a lump sum, RDs let you build savings gradually with small monthly contributions.

RD rates are typically similar to FD rates (6-7.5%). Interest is compounded quarterly. RDs are available at all banks and post offices in India with tenures from 6 months to 10 years.

Formula

RD maturity is computed with quarterly compounding on monthly deposits.

For ₹5,000/month at 6.5% for 5 years: - Total Invested = ₹3,00,000 - Maturity Amount ≈ ₹3,53,747 - Interest Earned ≈ ₹53,747

How to use this RD Calculator?

1. Enter your monthly deposit amount. 2. Set the RD interest rate from your bank. 3. Choose the tenure in years. 4. See maturity amount and total interest.

Frequently asked questions

Is RD interest taxable?
Yes, RD interest is taxable under your income tax slab. TDS of 10% is deducted if total interest across all FDs and RDs exceeds ₹40,000 in a financial year.
Can I withdraw RD before maturity?
Yes, but you will get a lower interest rate (usually 1-2% less) and may face a penalty. Some banks allow partial withdrawal.
Is RD better than SIP?
RDs offer guaranteed returns with zero risk, but lower returns (6-7%). SIPs in equity mutual funds offer higher potential returns (10-15%) but carry market risk.
