What is Percentage?
A percentage represents a fraction of 100 and is one of the most universally used mathematical concepts in everyday life. From calculating discounts during Amazon Great Indian Festival to understanding your exam scores, salary hikes, GST rates, mutual fund returns, and inflation — percentages are everywhere.
This calculator instantly answers the three most common percentage questions people ask: (1) What is X% of a number? (2) What is the number after adding X%? (3) What is the number after subtracting X%?
Percentages are fundamental to financial literacy. When your bank says your FD earns 7% interest, or your mutual fund returned 15% CAGR, or the government imposes 18% GST — you are dealing with percentages. Understanding how to calculate them quickly helps you make better financial decisions, compare deals while shopping, negotiate salary hikes, and verify bills.

Formula
The three fundamental percentage formulas:
1. Percentage of a value: Result = Value × Percentage / 100 Example: 20% of ₹5,000 = 5,000 × 20/100 = ₹1,000
2. Percentage increase (add percentage): New Value = Value × (1 + Percentage / 100) Example: ₹5,000 + 20% = 5,000 × 1.20 = ₹6,000
3. Percentage decrease (subtract percentage): New Value = Value × (1 − Percentage / 100) Example: ₹5,000 − 20% = 5,000 × 0.80 = ₹4,000
4. Percentage change between two values: Change% = ((New − Old) / Old) × 100 Example: Price from ₹200 to ₹250 = ((250−200)/200) × 100 = 25% increase
5. Reverse percentage (find original from discounted price): Original = Final Price / (1 − Discount%/100) Example: Price after 20% off is ₹800 → Original = 800/0.80 = ₹1,000
